Description: DM1999111211:SAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITY:APR1961 - The tragic life story of Patrice Lumumba: Triumph to disaster in six months - Last July he was Feted everywhere. Red carpets were put down for him in the USA, North Africa, Liberia and Ghana. By mid-February he was dead. Patrice Lumumba, first Prime minister of the independent Congo. He was devoted to his idea of the Congo. Lumumba's dream was the Congo as it is, but united into a single country under central rule. He was devoted to this idea, and he was prepared for all sacrifices to achieve it. Tshome thinks first of carving himself out a state in Katanga where he can be the boss. Kasavubu cherishes a dream of restoring the ancient empire of the Bankongo. That would involve throwing away some bits of the Congo as it is, and seizing hold of some other bits which don't belong to the Congo at all.
