Description: DM2008090104:EAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:JAN 1971 - The Rise Of Mau Mau - Arrested Mau Mau. The militant leaders concetrated on organising people into an underground movement, which became known to the authorities as Mau Mau, to fight for freedom from colonial rule. They mobilised people through the administering of an oath, and set up secret cells throughout Kikuyuland. They organised raids to get arms and ammunition. The authorities retaliated by arresting oath administrators and those who had taken the oath. Members of the movement took action against loyalists, mainly chiefs, who sided with the government and refused to take oath. They also attacked traitors, as well as some White settlers.
