Description: South Africa, Northern Kwazulu Natal. Mkuze/Jozini area. Bethesda Aids Action Team Five orphan boys who live alone. In this remote and large rural area. some parts only accessible by 4x4 vehicle, the Aids Action Team has trained over 150 home base carers (mainly rural women) in providing basic nursing skills. The organisation has also enlisted help from church ministers, traditional leaders and faith based organisations to extend caring beyond purely physical needs into the emotional and spiritual. The project identifies orphans, ensuring they have food, social grants and tries to place them with foster parents. The project also cares for and counsels 100's of ill clients, and monitors over 400 people as part of the nevirapine program. health community drugs baby child Photo Eric Miller/2004

Description: The natural harbour in Kalk Bay provided safety to a growing fishing community who thrived here in the late eighteenth century and early nineteenth century. During the apartheid era the fisher community was forced to live a small part of town close to the harbour. These are some of the Fishermen Flats that were erected to help with housing shortages. When I walked around in this part of town the children shouted: Hallo mister tourist! They know that tourism brings money to their community.
