Description: Coffins being taken from the city mortuary to the church for burial. On Wednesday 23rd January 2008, collective funerals were held at a church named Ligi Ndogo in Nairobi for those killed during the previous week's 3 day rallies by ODM supporters. They were protesting at the request of the Opposition leader, Raila Odinga, over the now much-debated disputed election result held 27th December. The ceremony was overseen by the ODM leadership. Unfortunately half-way through the service, when police tried to force supporters who had spilled onto the streets back into the church grounds, clashes between the GSU (General Service Unit who are specially-equipped riot police) and the service attenders ensued. The local telecommunications building was raided, looted and burned during the clashes.

Description: Members of Pietermaritzburg Christian Fellowship, friends and family take it in turn to fill in the grave of a community heroine. Akhona Nontsasa Mngweba was a light of hope to so many who knew her. Having contracted HIV which then developed into full-blown AIDS, against the tide of community opinion which keeps AIDS a secret, Akhona bravely proclaimed she was HIV positive and worked relentlessly to help others come to terms with the disease. Part of the community care programme at Project Gateway Akhona would visit from house to house in the townships around Pietermaritzburg sharing the hope she had found in Jesus

Description: A young man holds a spade of sand ready for the family of Rose Mabikwe to each take a handful and throw it on her coffin. Mama Rose Mabikwe was the wife of Tata Dominic Mabikwe. Prior to her death the couple were stalwarts in the Gugulethu community, one of the historic townships of Cape Town. They were also a stable anchor in the community for a new multicultural church called Khanyisa which was officially launched in 1999 after years of ground work. Tata Dominic is still one of the elders at the church which now has a new building on a strip of land sandwiched between Gugulethu and Mannenberg. Over the years the couple had given much to live out their understanding of the Kingdom of God where even in South Africa black and white could come together as brothers and sisters. Khanyisa, which means "light" is a partial fulfilment of that dream.
