Path: african.pictures / Bailey's African History Archive / Drum Social Histories
Description: DM2008090905:EAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:APR 1962 - Kaunda Gets An Early Call - Then comes the official call - the day's work has begun early. That special morning was a good morning, bright, clear, crisp with woodsmoke rising and hanging in thin columns. A black official car purred down the dingy road to Kenneth Kaunda's home. And official got out and stepped most officially up Mr. Kaunda, in dressing gown, by the door. "Ah Mr. Kaunda, so nice to see you... they want you at the Secretariat... message from Mr. Maudling." This is the story of the bit of business of Kaunda's that no body else knew about. The secret call to Secretariat that started another hectic day. But more than that it's a story of a man and his way of life. (Photograph by Peter Davies BAHA)

Description: DM2008060232:EAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:SEP 1963 ZANU! Shout The Sitholites with clenched fists raised The Sitholites vote, with their hands in the air, for Mr. Sitholes motion that a new Southern Rhodesian African party be formed. The setting sun was orange red and it filled the sky over Salisbury with a smoky glow. The cause was dust. Columns of dust rising from the tramp of a skin-hatted army of people marching home from Joshua Nkomos convention. They were on bicycles, squeezed into cars, on creaking buses, but mostly they were on foot. It would be days before some reached their homes. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)

    Title: Cape Town Stadium
Path: african.pictures / Independent Photographers / Terry February
Description: According to Robert Hormes the German architect from the firm GMP Architects ‘the only straight line in Cape Town before this Stadium was Table Mountain’. He felt something with a curve in the design of the Stadium was needed. ‘Something light to reflect the City’s attitude to life.’ Here the gentle sweep curve of a section of the Compression Ring on the columns of the stadium against the back drop of Hoerikwaggo captures Robert's idea that is now a reality. A slice of the stadium can often depict the character of this new landmark far more effectively than a bigger view. The curve in the design of the Stadium is impressive.

Description: Hoerikwago in frame: The Stadium's concrete columns holding up the first sections of the Compression Ring. It is the Compression Ring that will ultimately be the anchor point for the Stadium's roof. I was walking around in the Stadium one late afternoon seeking out an interesting section of the columns and the right light condition when the form and light of this moment caught my eye. The new majestic concrete columns and Compression Ring of the Stadium framing one of the wonders of our world, the historic Horikwago - Table Mountain makes an interesting image.

Description: The soaring columns of this elegant building are a fine example of the architecture of the late 19th century. The building was commenced in 1895 to house the Natal Colonial Government departments and completed four years later. It replaced a small Colonial Government building which stood immediately in front of it in Church Street, opposite the old Presbyterian Church. Outside the building in the mall area is the GANDHI STATUE which commemorates the Mahatma’s status as a world leader and his significant links with Pietermaritzburg.
