Description: Cape Town, South Africa:. More than a month after being displaced by xenophobic violence, refugees camp on the pavement in central Cape Town with little more than plastic bags to keep out the Cape winter chill. Ironically the place where they have taken up residence is across the street from the District Six Museum, a landmark of the infamous District Six forced removals of the 1960s. These refugees have had to endure the same kind of brutality at the hands of many who once endured such hardships themselves under apartheid.. Nyabenda Musa (left) and Gibhare Ramazani (right) from Burundi had a panel beater workshop in Nyanga township in Cape Town up to a month ago. When the xenophobic violence broke out gangs drove him away and destroyed the five cars he was busy working on stripping them of all parts. "The government says they are going to send us back to the townships. How am I going to pay those guys whose cars have been destroyed," said Ramazani. "Our tools are gone," said Musa. "We

In the former Eastern Nigeria, people Ð young men, old men, young women, old women and children Ð are still dying daily in hundreds and in thousands, from bullets, from bombs, from hunger, from exposure, from despair. Description: Picture shows a destroyed village near Sissi in West Darfur, Sudan on June 9, 2004.By mid 2004 in the Darfur region of western Sudan, ongoing conflict had displaced approximately 1.2 million people, most of whom were fleeing terror attacks by armed militia that included large-scale killings and abductions, including of children, as well as gang rapes, looting and burning of villages and stealing of livestock. Thousands have died from these attacks or from disease and tens of thousands of others have gathered in camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs), with little or no belongings and without adequate shelter, food or safe water and sanitation. An additional 120,000 people, primarily children and women, have fled across the border into neighbouring Chad. An estimated two million people have been affected by this crisis and are being further threatened by the imminent rainy season which will hinder access and increase the risk of disease.running in the Mornei IDP camp in West Darfu
