Description: The most threatened eagle species in South Africa due to their habit of eating carrion. Poisoned carcasses put out by farmers as bait for other problem animals are often eaten with fatal consequences. Have declined from 80% of their former range in South Africa, but also occur throughout Africa south of the Sahara. Name derived from French word meaning tight rope walker because of their distinctive 'wobbly' flight caused by their specialised wingshape and unusually short tails, both adaptations for gliding.

Description: Classed as one of the smaller eagles, they specialise in hunting game birds such as guinea fowl. Often hunting in pairs, these eagles are notoriously bold and aggressive. They occur most commonly in well-wooded and sometimes hilly terrain. Endemic to Africa, occuring northwards from the Orange River in South Africa up to sub Saharan countries.

Description: Very large eagle whose numbers are rapidly declining due to farmers putting out poisoned carcasses to kill problem animals. These eagles often scavange although perfectly cappable of killing large prey. Found throughout Africa, except for forested areas. Preys on any mammal, bird or insect, often resorting to pirating from other raptors.

Description: Goliath Heron (Ardea goliath). Isimangaliso Wetland Park (Greater St Lucia Wetland Park). KwaZulu Natal. South Africa. This is the world's largest heron. The height is 120–152 cm (47–60 in), the wingspan is 185–230 cm (73–91 in) and the weight is 4–5 kg (8.8–11 lbs). In flight it has a slow and rather ponderous look and, unlike some other herons, its legs are not held horizontally. Male and female look similar, with an overall covering of slate gray and chestnut feathers. The head and its bushy crest, face, back and sides of the neck are chestnut. The chin, throat, foreneck and upper breast are white, with black streaks across the foreneck and upper breast. The lower breast and belly are buff with black streaks. The upper mandible is black and the lores and orbital areas are yellow with a greenish tinge. The eyes are yellow and legs and feet are black. Juveniles look similar to the adults, but are paler. Important habitats are lakes, swamps, mangrove wetlands and sometimes river deltas. Goliath Herons feed on fish, frogs, small mammals and insects. It is a diurnal and often a rather inactive feeder, this heron hunts by standing in the shallows, or on floating vegetation, intently watching the water at its feet. As prey appears, the heron rapidly spears it with open mandibles.

Description: Waterbuck (Kobus ellipsiprymnus) male. Isimangaliso Wetland Park (Greater St Lucia Wetland Park). KwaZulu Natal. South Africa. Waterbuck stand 100 to 130 cm at the shoulder and weigh from 160 to 240 kg. Their coats are reddish brown in colour and become progressively darker with age; they have a white 'bib' under their throats and a white ring on their rumps surrounding their tails. The waterproofing secretions of the waterbuck's sweat glands produces an unpleasant odor in its meat, unless the animal is skinned carefully. According to African myth the meat of the waterbuck is not edible, but this is untrue—whilst not especially tasty, waterbuck venison is safe to eat. The long spiral structured horns, found only in males, sweep back and up. Waterbuck are found in scrub and savanna areas near water where they eat grass. Despite its name, the waterbuck does not spend much time in the water, but will take refuge there to escape predators. Waterbuck are diurnal. Females gather in herds of between two and six hundred individuals. Males keep territories of around three hundred acres (1.2 km²) during their prime. They usually lose their territories before the age of ten.
