Description: Nelson Mandela spent 18 years in prison on Robben Island. Every day for 8 hours a day for 13 years he spent in this lime quarry breaking rocks. The Lime Quarry was for senior political prisoners such as Govan Mbeki, Walter Sisulu, and Jacob Zuma. The prisoners preferred the interaction they could have here than the confinement of their cells because here they could talk and sing. So significant did the place become that after the 1994 elections a gathering for all former political prisoners in South Africa was held here. This pile of stones was placed here by former political prisoners who made it to that gathering - one stone for every prisoner. Sound Captions: 20060826robisl2.amr; 20060826robisl3.amr
