Description: One group of chokwe lived on the left bank of the Kasai river and the other in the area surrounding Dilolo. These Mikupela hour glass drums are from the Dilolo area, Lualaba district, Katanga Province. The mukupela drum was used in the past on royal occasions, e.g. for announcing wars. Nowadays it is a dance drum played sitting down. They are buzzing drums with a mirliton, played both ends. One side deep (has wax), the other higher. See article by Marie-Louise Bastin, Musical instruments, songs and dances of the chokwe, in journal, African music, vol 7. no.2, 1992. 3 , Chokwe , Not specified , International Library of African Music , Democratic Republic of Congo , ILM00407_13 , Instrument , Black and white print
