Description: LIMBE - JUNE 10: The new heavy-fuel thermal station at the foot of Mount Cameroon, on June 10, 2006 in Limbe, South West, Cameroon. It is the biggest investment of AES-SONEL, the only producing and distributing electricity power, since it is privatized. With a power generation capacity, the plant address the urgent electricity shortage in Cameroon. (Photo Jean Pierre Kepseu/Panapress)

Description: Machinery to recover mercury from carbon chips. Thor Chemicals, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. Thousands of barrels of toxic mecury waste imported from industrial world countries was to be processed at Thor Chemicals in Cato Ridge, KwaZulu Natal. Thor Chemicals was sued for millions in the late 1990s by employees charging that they had contracted mercury poisoning. Two workers had died at the plant of alledged poisoning. The waste also contaminated rivers in the area. An investigation was launched by the South African government culminating in a directive in terms of Section 28 (4) of the National Environmental Management Act issued in 2003. In terms of the directive, Thor Chemicals was required to take specific steps to clean up all the mercury contamination in the surrounding environment and store the mercury waste securely failing which the government would take over the operation and charge Thor for expenses incurred.
