Title: Post-Election Upheaval in Kenya - January 2008.
Path: african.pictures / Independent Photographers / George Philipas
Description: ODM supporter firing a sling with a stone at GSU personnel. The GSU were dispatched to protect the railway line that runs through the slum of Kibera on its way to its final destination in Uganda on the last day of mass protests called by leaders of the Opposition. ODM supporters accuse Uganda and its President Museveni of siding with President Kibaki in the disputed election row. There are rumours (and only that) of Ugandan military personnel helping Govt forces quell protesters. While these accusations remain unfounded what is certainly true is that Museveni, President of Uganda remains the only Head of State to officially congratulate President Kibaki on the disputed re-appointment before the peace agreement was signed.

Description: ODM supporters accuse Uganda and its President Museveni of siding with President Kibaki in the disputed election row. On Wednesday 23rd January 2008, collective funerals were held at a church named Ligi Ndogo in Nairobi for those killed during the previous week's 3 day rallies by ODM supporters. They were protesting at the request of the Opposition leader, Raila Odinga, over the now much-debated disputed election result held 27th December. The ceremony was overseen by the ODM leadership. Unfortunately half-way through the service, when police tried to force supporters who had spilled onto the streets back into the church grounds, clashes bet

The launching of a television station was first mooted in Nigeria as far back as 1956 shortly before Queen Elizabeth IIs visit to Nigeria, by the then Premier of Eastern Nigeria, Dr. the Hon. Nnamdi Azikiwe. For various reasons, this was not possible and so the Western Nigeria Government were first, into action, WNTV began programming on October 1, 1959. Since then, WNTV has improved considerable. For, during the pioneering days, it depended wholly on imported programmes including a large helping of wild west films. For the past two years, WNTV has shown live programmes of light entertainment, Drama, Discussion Groups, Educational Programmes all local programmes with gradually improving standards as the television teams learn to use their new medium. Description: An Orphanage in the tiny village of Sagam, Nyanza Province in Western Kenya run by the local Reverend Kenneth Wachianga.Jonah (right) helping his blind twin brother David (left) to make the two-finger 'nimechill' salute. Both kids were born without any defects due to severe malnutrition, David now suffers from Category 1 Xerophltamia and is virtually blind without much chance of ever seeing again. Both kids were abandoned by their father after their mother died. An alcohoilic, their father was unable to cope and vented his frustrations and animosity particularly at the twins. It culminated with him trying to throw them in front of a moving car. The twins are the reason the orphanage was set up. When Reverend Kenneth Wachianga who founded the home discovered them in a run-down shack left to fend on their own and in such an advanced state of malnutrition, he felt that something had to be done.

Description: DM2008081513:GHAED:LABOUR:CHILDREN:JUN 1960 - Child Labour - These children are not playing with pebbles. Oh, no. They are tradesmen even at their tender age. They are counting garden eggs which they are helping to sell at the Accra Market. They wake early, work till late. No play for them. It's a familiar sight to us all. Seven and eight-year-olds hawking goods through our streets. But can we tolerate near-babies working eight, nine hours a day in our country? Child labour has been part of the Ghanaian traditional life of the country from time immemorial. Kids who should be sitting in school are doing heavy work in carpenters' and blacksmith' shops. Some of them who work in private homes are not much older than ten. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)
