    Title: Old-fashioned swimming pool
Path: african.pictures / The Media Bank / Izak de Vries
Description: The Castle of the Cape of Good Hope has been restored during the nineties. During the restoration of the inner courtyard, the team discovered the foundations of the early 18th century bakery and this pool. Both have since been researched and rebuilt from plans and paintings. It is said that the wife of his Excellency the governor would wade in this pool in full dress, provided that the eyes of the soldiers were kept occupied elsewhere!

    Title: Shades of history
Path: african.pictures / Shuter & Shooter Publishers / Izak de Vries
Description: Castle Cape Town arch and old tram horse-drawn The Castle of Good Hope is the oldest surviving building in South Africa. It is said that building started in 1666. It took years to complete and a number of alterations have been made over the centuries. This castle replaced a smaller clay and timber fort built by Jan van Riebeeck in 1652. It used to be the headquarters in the Cape of Good Hope for the Dutch East Indian Company, better known as the VOC (Verenigde Oos-Indische Compagnie). Today the castle is the regional headquarters of the South African Army in the Western Cape and it is home to the famous William Fehr Collection of historic artworks and the Castle Military Museum. Tours are conducted for tourists, or one can wander around inside the walls. One can also hop onto a horse-powered trip through Cape Town, starting here at the museum. On the left is an old horse-drawn tram that has been restored. The first horse-drawn tram service in Cape Town is said to have started in 1862,

    Title: Het Posthuys, St James
Path: african.pictures / Shuter & Shooter Publishers / Izak de Vries
Description: Het Posthuys (the Dutch for The Post Office) has reportedly been built in 1673 already. It was built by the Dutch East Indian Company, better known as the VOC (Verenigde Oos-Indische Compagnie) to protect the new trading post, called the Cape of Good Hope, from an attack. Het Posthuys is situated in present-day St James, so it would have been the main defence for an attack from False Bay. The Castle of Good Hope would have been the defence position for an attack from Table Bay. Het Posthuys houses a museum at present.

    Title: Centrepiece of Castle Pool
Path: african.pictures / The Media Bank / Izak de Vries
Description: This fish supposedly represents a dolphin. Alas. It is the centrepiece for the swimming pool used by the governor and his family in the days of the Dutch East Indian Company. The Castle of the Cape of Good Hope has been restored during the nineties. During the restoration of the inner courtyard, the team discovered the foundations of the early 18th century bakery and this pool. Both have since been researched and rebuilt from plans and paintings. This fish too has been reconstructed from drawings. (Visitors to Cape Town should look out for the fish at the Parliament building. There the fish hold up the lights to entrance of parliament.)

Title: The door to the William Fehr Collection
Path: african.pictures / The Media Bank / Izak de Vries
Description: This is the entry to the quarters of the former Governors of Cape Town. Go in through the doors and up the stairs, and you will come across one of the longest tables you'll ever see. Nobody wants to be on washing up duty for that dining room! Today these quarters are home to the famous William Fehr Collection of historic artworks. It tells the story of transport in the Cape in vivid images. In the days before cameras, artists used to do the work of present-day stock photographers: They captured history.

Description: The Anglican Cathedral Church, built in Early English Gothic, the 13th Century architectural style revived during Queen Victoria's reign, is seen in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape, South Africa on Tuesday November 9, 2004. The building was started in 1824 and finally completed 128 years later in 1952. The earliest development towards a church came from a connection of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel with the British Secretary of State for War and the then Governor of the Cape, Lord Charles Somerset. The name 'Cathedral of St. Michael and St. George' marks the healing of the breach in the Grahamstown diocese begun when the dean excluded the Bishop from St. George's Church and the congregation split between St. George's Church and St. Michael's Pro-Cathedral, where the 4th Bishop Alan Webb, set up his throne. The breach was healed in 1885 after the death of the Dean when St. Michael's congregation moved, with Bishop Webb, back to St. George's. The first St. George's opened

The monument is to "the Men of Albany" who lost their lives in the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902. The sculpture is by Stanley Nicholson Babb and Rudyard Kipling specially wrote the inscription. The bronze relief-plaque on it honouring the Pioneer women depicts the legendary heroism of Elizabeth Salt, who reputedly carried a keg of gunpowder to the troops during the Battle of Grahamstown on 22 April 1819. She benefited from a noteworthy Xhosa tradition not to harm women in warfare. The Settler Memorial Tower was built to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the British Settlers' arrival in 1820.
