Description: DM2005020702:SAED:SOCIAL:MUSIC:PERSONALITY:SEP1957 - Banana Boy Blues! - Then there was Gambi George, certainly one of top drummers of all races in the Union. Ten years ago a Johannesburg music teacher embarked on an experiment to find out how musical or unmusical Indian Music students were. He was primarily interested in producing Indian jazzmen because he had an argument with other musicians who said that only Africans and Coloureds make good jazzmen. He had been told that Indians had a poor sense of Western rhythms and hardly a good ear for the western melody and harmony. (Photograph by Drum Photograph ©BAHA)

    Title: Washing and lines
    Image Number: APN111694
    Media Id: 87_215
Path: african.pictures / Shuter & Shooter Publishers / Izak de Vries
Description: The bright white washing was difficult to photograph and I was relieved when my compromise light meter found one setting that showed it off against the stark lines of the township around it. The dollops of red, yellow in green gives the picture life. These shacks were about to be demolished when I took these pictures. In their place the government has built two-story apartment blocks. These shacks have developed because of years of influx control under apartheid. In the homelands, or Bantustans, there were not enough jobs and not enough land. People had to move to the city. Today township dwellers are a powerful lobby group and our government is providing electricity and other services.

Description: This spaza owner has grown rich and affluent. He has advertised his prominent position in the township and has grown more successful as a result. This is a wonderful example of the two economies in South Africa. Here in the township, where the poor live, we also see an upper-class shack dweller developing. These shacks were about to demolished when I took these pictures. In their place the government has built two-storey apartment blocks. (At least one person will feel at home on the top storey!) These shacks have sprung up because of years of influx control under apartheid. In the homelands, or Bantustans, there were not enough jobs and not enough land. People had to move to the city. Today township dwellers are a powerful lobby group and our government is providing electricity and other services to them.

Description: Look at the ingenuity with which these shacks have been built. The human spirit and mind is just great. Even in the face of poverty, caused by apartheid and unequal opportunities, these guys have used wood, plastic and old tins to create these interesting bits of technology. These shacks have developed because of years of influx control under apartheid. In the homelands, or Bantustans, there were not enough jobs and not enough land. People had to move to the city. Today township dwellers are a powerful lobby group and our government is providing electricity and other services.

Description: A Road Less Travelled: a reflection on the boundaries of Dr J. V. Larsen’s career. My father's life has been defined by boundaries, both good and bad! Many of these he crossed, some to his credit, and some to his detriment. Always, however, it was in the service of others and his God. In the 1960s he crossed the boundary of what was socially acceptable In a nation dominated by the socio-political and economic system of apartheid. As a recently qualified doctor he took his young wife to live in rural Zululand to serve and live among the poorest of the poor on a mission hospital, Charles Johnson Memorial Hospital in Nqutu, rural Zululand. Such was the multiracial character of that community and its impact of the surrounding area that the apartheid security police kept it under careful scrutiny. He crossed the boundary of personal ambition when in the early 1980s he was given the opportunity to go to the top of his profession as professor of obstetrics and gynaecology at the largest tea
