Description: Felix sits holding a football in the doorway of his home in Nketepa village, Ghana. His sisters stand close by. Felix is part of the Kwahu Tafo Village Football Academy in Mpraeso, a town 3 hours journey north of Accra in Ghana. The Academy was established to offer soccer training to local children. Many of the children come from underprivileged homes from the surrounding area. The majority of the children live in a hostel in Kwahu Tafo. The children sleep in a single dormitory, packed with 15 bunk beds, while some sleep on mattresses on the floor. The children help to cook their own meals, and maintain the hostel. The staff at the Academy ensure that all the children attend school during the day, before participating in training each afternoon. (Credit: Nikki Rixon/Twenty Ten/Africa Media Online)

Description: Samburu sisters. Archer's Point, Isiolo. Northern Kenya.Looking back I have often wondered what it was that made such a strong impression on me the first time I visited Africa as a tourist at the age of 17.
Without a doubt the single most powerful memory is that of African children. Radiating and beaming with smiles and energy and shouting out the universal greeting of 'How are You?!' in an almost chant-like manner. I felt an emerging passion that would see me re-visit the Continent again and again in my work until eventually moving first to Kenya and now to South Africa.
Little did I know back then that over a decade later I would of had the honour to work so closely with them, with a variety of high-profile charities and NGO's. This is a small cross-section of that work and a tribute to their courage and to their blissful happiness often in the face of such harsh adversity.I have been careful with each picture not to appeal to a sense of pity towards the subjects, something

Rhoda, 28, sits to the right inside their looted home in Chocolate City, a suburb outside Monrovia. The three sisters were raped by soldiers during a single attack on their home in July 2003. Annie's daughter, center, has been sickly since the attack after a soldier beat the child when she wouldn't stop crying. The three women are weak from illnesses probably related to sexually transmitted diseases. The attack left them penniless to they are unable to get medical care.
