Title: The New Synagogue in Cape Town II
Path: african.pictures / Shuter & Shooter Publishers / Izak de Vries
Description: This is the one of the biggest synagogues in Cape Town. It stands proudly next to the Jewish Museum and Holocaust Centre in the Gardens. It is called the "New Synagogue" because it was built to replace the oldest synagogue in the country. This is a magnificent building with dark, ornate pews, but brilliant stained glass windows and touches of white marble, red velvet and gold leaf. It actually seems to glow warmth. It is a great place for Jews to practice their religion.

Description: St Andrews Church at Reichenau Mission on the banks of the Pelola River. Near Underbeg. KwaZulu Natal. South Africa. This historic mission, founded in 1886, was the first satellite station of the famous Mariannhill Mission near Durban. Abbot Francis Pfanner, of the New Reformed Cistercian order of monks, commonly known as Trappists, came out to South Africa during the early 1800s. He first established Mariannhill, and broke away from the monastic tradition of silence to serve and missionise the population of the early Natal colony. In Catholic litany, the Virgin Mary is called the Rosa Mystica and under Abbot Pfanner’s singular direction, a series of Mariann or Rosa Mystica mission churches were built. With its beautiful murals and unique, richly coloured stained-glass windows, Reichenau was modelled on the Gothic style of the original European church.

Description: January 17, 2015. Methodist church member Paulin Chikomb cleans the stained glass windows inside the Central Methodist Church. Efforts are underway to clean up the church and relocate hundreds of refugees to better homes. The church gave sanctuary to thousands of refugees who were displaced due to political violence in Zimbabawe and xenophobic violence in South Africa. In recent years a criminal element began to infest the church and the church fell into a state of squalor. Picture: JAMES OATWAY © Sunday Times/ Times Media
