Description: SAED:SOCIAL:GAMBLING:DRUM JANUARY 1961- Fah Fee: all sections play this number racket Ð By signs the news goes round, no 21 The Elephant come. The sleek American car with the China man behind the wheel threads its way carefully down Hanover Street, spine of Cape TownÕs teeming District Six, where they Ðsay Ð a thousand murderers could hide for a lifetime from the cops. Even in the changed world of today. It pulls in to the curb, the engine still ticking over, and the chinaman gives a gentle toot on his horn. Form the shadowy doorway of a tumbledown shop a lean, quick figure emerges, one hand gripping something in his jacket pocket. He glances swiftly up and down the street, over the heads of gutterfuls of kids and round the broad beams of washerwomen coming and going. ItÕs all clear Ð and he draws a fistful of paper slips from his pocket. As the tiny square of paper is taken from the matchbox the Chinaman is already on his way again, and the helper lifts his hand to his throat

Description: Cape Town, South Africa. More than a month after being displaced by xenophobic violence, refugees camp on the pavement in central Cape Town with little more than plastic bags to keep out the Cape winter chill. Ironically the place where they have taken up residence is across the street from the District Six Museum, a landmark of the infamous District Six forced removals of the 1960s. These refugees have had to endure the same kind of brutality at the hands of many who once endured such hardships themselves under apartheid.. Pictured: A rufugee stands outside his makeshift shelter to keep out the Cape winter cold. He and others have put up poingnant signs asking questions of the South African public. Many of these refugees have survived war in their own nations and had come to South Africa to find a place of peace and prosperity. That dream was shattered last month with the outbreak of xenophobic violence.

Description: Throughout Lagos there are groups of people huddled around radios and televisions for the 2010 FIFA World Cup matches. Every so often there is a cheer from a street corner, or a heated debate between shop keepers. However, the attitude of Nigerians towards the World Cup has been reserved. The squad that was selected to represent Nigeria in South Africa was a hotly contested issue among football supporters, and the poor preparation in the run up to the tournament cast a shadow over the team’s performance.(Credit: Adolphus Opara/Twenty Ten/Africa Media Online)

Waiting at a Sophiatown bus stop for her husband, her dazzling smile personality made her outstanding in a dull crowd. They went to a movie show when he arrived. The Editor said, "On Sunday, you and Bob Gosani must take the Beauty Queen out. Take her to the Zoo, to the Park, and anywhere else she orders you to take her." I held my breath and wanted to jump for joy. I wanted to say, "Chief there is no need for you to say we MUST." A chance like that was too good to miss. Description: A young boy stands in front of a boat that is being created near the shore front in Mogadishu, Somalia. 20 years of civil war had not only destroyed the people of Somalia it destroyed the entire infrastructure network of the capital, Mogadishu too. By October 2011 visible signs that everyday economic life and normality had began to return to Mogadishu were there for all to see. This had only become possible with the AMISOM offensive that had pretty much cleared Mogadsihu of Al-Shabab. From a tiny area around Aden Ade International Airport in Mogadishu, AMISOM forces have slowly pushed Al-Shabaab back and now control most of the capital city.
