The Anglo-Boer War, also known as the South African War, broke out on 11 October 1899. This war was mainly fought between Britain and the two republics of the Transvaal and the Orange Free State, although the local black population also participated on both sides of the conflict. During the war a Scorched Earth Policy was implemented resulting in the establishment of white and black concentration camps wherein women, children and the elderly were detained. The war dragged on for three years ending on 31 May 1902 with the signing of the Peace Treaty of Vereeniging. The War Museum in Bloemfontein, South Africa, provides the visitor with an insight into the course and development of this war through its unique collections that are available for licensing through african.pictures
