                                a near miracle…

In a recent article in Daily Maverick, Paul Weinberg, relates the experience of being the official photographer for the Independent Electoral Commission in South Africa’s first democratic election – both the chaos and the wonder in what he calls the “near miracle” of South Africa’s first free and fair democratic election 30 years ago.

Paul Weinberg is a South African photographer known for documenting social and political issues, especially during apartheid. His photography focuses on marginalised groups, environmental concerns, and indigenous cultures. Weinberg’s images tell compelling stories of struggle, identity, and resilience, offering both historical insight and a deep sense of empathy. We are privileged to represent a large amount of his work which can be viewed in our archives.
