   Tom Mboya: assassinated 1969

This year marks 55 years since Tom Mboya’s assassination in Kenya.

Mboya was a dynamic Kenyan leader whose contributions spanned trade unionism
, politics, and education.

Camerapix, has recently released these rare images of Mboya’s life and death.

On July 5, 1969, Mboya was shot at close range outside a pharmacy on Nairobi’s Government Road (now Moi Avenue). Legendary East African photographer, Mo Amin, arrived minutes later, capturing these images of the tragedy.

Within minutes, an ambulance arrived, and medical personnel, along with Dr. Chaudry, who had quickly come to the scene, worked urgently to get him onto a stretcher. Inside the ambulance, frantic efforts continued to try and save Tom Mboya.

Tom Mboya’s cortège reaches Rusinga Island, marking the final leg of his journey home. Thousands of mourners gathered to pay their respects to the fallen statesman, whose assassination shook the nation.
