The Mbweni Ruins was once St. Mary's School for Freed Slave Girls and was built between 1871 and 1874 by the Universities Mission to Central Africa (UMCA). As slaves were freed by the British from illegal dhow traders, a village of freed slaves developed around the mission. At one point there were at least 250 freed slaves living there.
