A group of people stand together at what may be the funeral of Ida Fiyo Mntwana (1903-1960), former president of the African National Congress Women's League (ANCWL) and a former National President of the Federation of South African Women (FEDSAW) at a cemetery near the Western Native Township, Johannesburg. Ida Mntwana died during the Treason Trial and meetings and demonstrations were banned at the time, but the African National Congress (ANC) decided to make Ida's funeral an occasion for the defiance of the law. Winnie Mandikizela-Mandela (26/9/36-2/4/2018) and other ANCWL leaders were pallbearers at this funeral, but are not visible in the image. The Treason Trial was a trial in Johannesburg in which one hundred and fifty-six people were arrested in a raid and accused of treason in South Africa in 1956. The main trial lasted until 1961 when all of the defendants were found not guilty.
