The President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, fondly known as Madiba, celebrated his 78th birthday with more than 2,000 children who are living with disability in disadvantaged communities across the county. The day-long birthday extravaganza was held on the 17th July 1996 on the grounds of Hilton College near Pietermaritzburg in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. In advance of the day's festivities, the invited children were examined and treated by a team of orthopaedic specialists and physiotherapists. Many of them were given life-changing wheelchairs. Madiba was delighted to be able to share his 100kg birthday cake, ablaze with 78 candles, with the children and their carers, circus performers who provided much of the entertainment, and other assembled guests. The event has the backing of the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund. Nelson Mandela was born on the 18th July 1918 in Mvezo, a small village in the Eastern Cape.
