The President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, mingles with his guests after enjoying a circus performance in the big top tent erected for his 78th birthday celebration on the 17th July 1996 on the grounds of Hilton College near Pietermaritzburg in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. More than 2,000 children who are living with disability in disadvantaged communities have come from across the country to celebrate Madiba's birthday with him. The circus experience is a first for most of the children, as well as for the country's president! Later in the day, Nelson Mandela took the opportunity to speak to sponsors and business people gathered for the event about the importance of civil society working together to ensure that the needs of disabled children are incorporated into every programme for children. The event has the backing of the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund.Sublocation:Hilton CollegeCity:PietermaritzburgProvince or State:KwaZulu-NatalCountry:South AfricaDate Created:17-07-1996Creator:ANC ArchivesCredit Notice:ANC Archives / african.picturesKeywords:
