The President of the African National Congress, Nelson Mandela, accompanied by the ANC spokesman, Mr Pallo Jordan, visits the People's Republic of China (PRC) in October 1992. The weeklong visit to China involves discussions towards establishing official ties between a Greater China (including PRC and the Republic of China) and South Africa. A number of welcoming ceremonies are held at which the ANC delegates meet with Chinese dignitaries including President Yang Shangkun and the Chinese Communist Party General Secretary, Jiang Zemin. On the 6 October, Nelson Mandela (left) meets with Prime Minister Li Peng (right) at a welcoming ceremony at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. On the same day, Nelson Mandela visits Peking University where he is awarded an honorary doctorate by the university's Vice President and professor of law, Professor Luo Haocai.
