The President of the African National Congress, Nelson Mandela, visits the People's Republic of China (PRC) in October 1992. The weeklong visit to China involves discussions towards establishing official ties between a Greater China (including PRC and the Republic of China) and South Africa. A number of welcoming ceremonies are held where the ANC delegates meet with, amongst others, President Yang Shangkun, Prime Minister Li Peng and the Chinese Communist Party General Secretary, Jiang Zemin. A welcoming ceremony is also held at Peking University on 6 October, where Professor Luo Haocai, the university's vice president and professor of law, awards Nelson Mandela an honorary doctorate. After many years of strong lobbying by the PRC, and engagement with Nelson Mandela, official relations between the PRC's 'One China' and South Africa were established in 1998.
