The President of the African National Congress, Nelson Mandela (centre), accompanied by the ANC spokesman, Mr Pallo Jordan (right), visits the People's Republic of China (PRC) in October 1992. At this time South Africa recognises Taiwan (ROC) as independent from the PRC, and Nelson Mandela is in support of a 'Two Chinas' policy. The weeklong visit to China involves discussions towards establishing official ties between a Greater China (including PRC and ROC) and South Africa. A number of welcoming ceremonies are held where the ANC delegates meet with, amongst others, President Yang Shangkun, Prime Minister Li Peng and the Chinese Communist Party General Secretary, Jiang Zemin. Press conferences are held at the Great Hall of the People. After many years of strong lobbying by the PRC, and engagement with Nelson Mandela, official relations between the PRC's 'One China' and South Africa were established in 1998.
