Title: Drum Magazine social history photographs, Ghana edition 174 Description: Jamestown, Portrait of a town – The dignity of woman is upheld in Jamestown as much as anywhere else. It finds expression majestically in this picture of the Queen Mother of Jamestown, Naa Afipong. Of all the various towns which constitute the city of Accra, the one which has best managed to maintain its individuality through the ages is James Town. And this is in spite the fact that it was one of the first to come under the influence of Europeans. Drum wanted to portray the ageless greatness of Jamestown and there seemed to be no better way than asking Jamestown to tell its own story – by presenting a camera's eye view of life as it is lived in James Town.
