This is the flag of the Confederate States of America, given by Captain Semmes of the commerce raider CSS Alabama to  William Anderson, of Andersons Ship Chandlers, in Simons Town. It was presented to the South African Museum in the 1930s by  William Runciman.The Alabama was one of the most famous ships in the American Civil War, inflicting considerable damage on the sea-trade of the United States by sinking 62 ships and capturing many others.
