Description: DM2008110501:SAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:GCP OCT25 - Two Women Inspired A Great Man - Fighter Chief Luthuli with Oliver Tambo at an A.N.C. protest meeting before the ban. Two women have played a major part in Albert Luthuli's life - his mother and his wife. Though she did not live to see him installed as chief, from the days of his early childhood his mother used to boast: "My son will lead my people one day." Albert John Luthuli was born in Solusi, near Bulawayo, in 1898. His father, John Bunyan Luthuli, had gone to Rhodesia as an interpreter during the Matabele Rebellion and stayed on to do missionary work for the Seventh Day Adventists. Description: DM2008060231:EAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:NOV 1963 Zimbabwes Big Two Clash Again Ten Thousand ZAPU Followers at Barbourfields Stadium, Bulawayo, Hear Joshua Nkomo ridicule the Rev Sithole. Outside Barbourfields sports Stadium, Bulawayo, the large crowd swelled and buzzed in the hot afternoon. Inside, on an empty patch of ground, a lonely little group squatted, terribly quiet, and huddled a little closer as the mob all around howled insults. The little island of people were ZANU supporters waiting for their leader, the Rev Ndabaningi Sithole. The surroundings masses were also waiting, but not to cheer. It was like sacrifice day in an ancient Roman arena. (Photograph by Drum Photographer ©BAHA)

Description: DM2008060512:EAED:BOOZE:PERSONALITIES:NOV 1964 Skokiaan Dive- The Booze Is Cheap And Deadly Skoki-Skoki works quicklybut the hangover next morning is a forestate of hell. Drunk for a shilling, dead drunk for 2/-, plain dead for three thats roughly the offer along the backstreets of Salisbury and Bulawayo townships where Skokiaan dives maintain a twilight existence. The lure is instant oblivion of customers and instant profits for brewers. Three years ago the police clamp-down had squeezed the Skokiaan supplies to a dribble, but the flow is still there. DRUM managed to infiltrate one of these sessions. The place was a big dinning room with all the furniture pulled out and only hard benches lining the walls. The benches creaked as serious drinkers levered to their lips giant mugs of liquid murder. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)

The first shock to the nation came in November, when riots in Bulawayo turned into a full-scale battle between ZIPRA and ZANLA guerrillas housed in the citys Engtumbane township. For days, thousands of heavily armed men rocked the city with machine gun, mortar and rocket fire. About 60 people were killed, and more than 400 wounded, before the National Army managed to regain control of the area. Most of the casualties were civilians. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)

Sixty years of racial peace. Than one brick, thrown in anger, triggered violence and put an end to hopes of solving the countrys problems with old fashioned political ideas. Now is the time for new thinking. It couldnt happen here, they said. Nyasaland and Northern Rhodesia, yes. They were very different places and Black Nationalism had been allowed to run riot. . There was one minor scuffle between police and demonstrators. Angry shouts from the crowd and several speeches from official. But at the end, the crowd had to go home without any firm hope of work in the near future. It was demonstration season in the twitching Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. Everyone, it seemed, had something to demonstrate about. In Bulawayo and Salisbury hundreds of workers turned out plea for work or bread. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)

She remembers her father quite well. He was a fat ma, she reports, as almost everybody was in those days. (That was because we didnt eat meat from the Cold Storage then.) Of earlier day, she remembers the prophecies of drought and of her father dying in flight from white birds that followed the execution of the great wise man Chaminuka. About 2,000 ex-ZAPU supporters were at Salisbury Station to greet their ex-leader. Dozens of ex-ZAPU skin hats bobbed about in the crowd. And when the train rolled in and the familiar head poked out of a window wearing the daddy of all skin hats, the chanting of ex-ZAPU songs and chants could be heard blocks away. Coming from an organization that officially does not exist, it was a substantial display. (Photograph by Drum Photographer ©BAHA)
