Description: Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, 11/1999This child is one of many at the SOS ChildrenÕs home in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. SOS is an organisationwhich runs numerous homes for orphans all over the country. With HIV expected to create 1 million orphans in South Africa alone, such services are overwhelmed. The legacy of the apartheid system of migrant labour means that fatherlessness is epidemic in the nation and it is not always possibl to keep families entact when so many are run by single motherschild, fun, kids, children, camp, black african boy, sad, orphan, fatherless

Description: A European African (White) grandfather originally of Norwegian decent looks on at his adoptive Black African grandson who is of Xhosa decent. Such adoptions have become common place in South Africa where there are an unusual number of orphans due to the destruction of the family unit in many communities by forced migrant labour under apartheid, and more recently by the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

Description: A storm brews of the town of Elliot in the Eastern Cape. The Eastern Cape Drakensberg provides a stunning backdrop to the town. RDP houses are a feature of the town which seems to have a far larger population than the economic activity represented at the town centre. This is typical of many Eastern Cape towns where communities are often sustained by migrant labour with adults of working age living in the major cities and sending money home to the children and old people who live in such towns and surrounding rural areas.

Description: A rural scene in the Mount Frere area, former Transkei, Eastern Cape, South Africa. As a former apartheid Bantustan, the Transkei has unusual settlement patterns as a result of resettlement of populations into "villages" under apartheid policy. These tended not to be viable economic units and to this day such settlements are primarily sustained by migrant labour.
