Description: DM2008082611:EAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:FEB 1965 - What Future For East Africa's Asians? - Tom Mboya was initially popular among Asians, but after independence he accused them of lacking respect for Africans. Although the new government set out to pacify Whites, its attitude towards Kenya's Asian community was less conciliatory. Indeed, the Asians had much cause for discomfort in the early years. Description: DM2008082610:EAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:FEB 1965 - What Future For East Africa's Asians? - Anti-Asian sentiment surfaced after independence with Africans accusing Asians of being unwilling to integrate. Although the new government set out to pacify Whites, its attitude towards Kenya's Asian Community was less conciliatory. Indeed, the Asians had much cause for discomfort in the early years. The Asians in East Africa are a very frightened people. Almost all of the 352,000 - strong East African community has felt a growing sense of insecurity. At a memorable luncheon speech to the Young Ismaelis, Tom Mboya delivered his thunderbolt. His words were moderate, but as one Asian put it, "they came from a man we always thought our friend". Description: DM2008060905:EAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:Dr Milton Obote Speaks To Drum - This Interview with Dr Obote was held before the recent crisis. We were already producing the magazine when the news came through that five cabinet ministers had been detained and the constitution suspended. This makes it all the more interesting to learn what Dr Obote was thinking beforehand. Throughouit the interview he talked as leader of a united U.P.C. party. And in doing so he revealed his attitude of mind, his way of thinking before the events which sent Uganda teering on the brink of disaster. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)

Description: Between 1536 and the abolition of the slave trade, the Island of GorŽe, just off the coast at Dakar, Senegal, was used as a slave post from where hundreds of thousands of Africans were shipped to the new world to serve as slave labour on plantations. According to UNESCO the departure of the slaves to the Americas depended on the buyers. The father went to Louisiana in the USA, the mother headed for Brazil or Cuba, the child to Haiti or the West Indies. The separation was total. Ille De GorŽe was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. See http://webworld.unesco.org/goree/

Description: According to Robert Hormes the German architect from the firm GMP Architects ‘the only straight line in Cape Town before this Stadium was Table Mountain’. He felt something with a curve in the design of the Stadium was needed. ‘Something light to reflect the City’s attitude to life.’ Here the gentle sweep curve of a section of the Compression Ring on the columns of the stadium against the back drop of Hoerikwaggo captures Robert's idea that is now a reality. A slice of the stadium can often depict the character of this new landmark far more effectively than a bigger view. The curve in the design of the Stadium is impressive.
