Title: The moon from within an Airbus A319
Path: african.pictures / The Media Bank / Izak de Vries
Description: We took off at Cape Town International en route to Durban just as the sun was about to rise. Slowly it grew light and suddenly I saw the setting moon in the distance. It was a lovely sight. I took many pictures. This one worked, thanks in part to the stability of the plane, and an image stabiliser. At f2.8 and 1/20s one has little margin for error, but I persisted at ISO 80 because I wanted to capture the colours. The aircraft was an Airbus A319.

Title: Boy playing a marimba I
Path: african.pictures / Shuter & Shooter Publishers / Izak de Vries
Description: The marimba was carved by Albert M Munyai, one of the best-known artists in Venda, a region in the Limpopo province. Venda is known for its amazing wood carvers. The Venda culture uses drums and marimbas for religious activities. This little man is having fun playing it. I used a low shutter speed (1/25) and only natural light to capture his movement.

    Title: Fog nets
Path: african.pictures / Independent Photographers / Christine Nesbitt Hills
Description: A fog net that is used to capture water from rain and fog is seen in the rural area of Lutshaya near Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape of South Africa on Friday October 29, 2004. Fog forms when water vapor cools down and condenses to form tiny water droplets in the atmosphere. Apart from altitude, there is not much difference between clouds and fog. Fog formation is, however, directly affected by near-surface conditions, adiabatic cooling and flow patterns in the atmosphere. Fog collects on the nets and runs down into a tank. Many locations are suitable for fog water collection. Frequent fog episodes even appear in extremely dry regions, or high altitude mountains, where clean drinking water is not always accessible. Fog water may serve as an additional source of water, which in turn, may contribute significantly to the quality of life. (Photo by Christine Nesbitt).
