    Title: Historic Grahamstown
Path: african.pictures / Independent Photographers / Christine Nesbitt Hills
Description: The Drostdy Gate is seen in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape of South Africa on Monday November 8, 2004. The Drostdy Gate was designed by Major C.J. Selwyn in 1835 and built by the Royal Engineers in 1841 or 1842. The purpose of hisgateway was to provide an entrance to the military establishment which was to be on the site of the unoccupied and unused Drostdy House grounds. At a later date sentry boxes and walls on both sides of the gateway were added. Framed in the Gateway's arch is the clock tower of the main administration block of Rhodes University which was based on a design by Sir Herbert Baker and Francis Kendall and incorporates the site of the old Drostdy. Founded on 31 March 1904, Rhodes is unique among South African universities in that it has no natural hinterland from which to draw its students. The majority come from far afield. Description: Seen is the Observatory Museum's Clock Tower in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape of South Africa on Tuesday Nov ember 9, 2004. The owner-designer of the Observatory was a watchmaker and jeweller, Henry Carter Galpin, who lived in Grahamstown from 1850 until his death in 1886. Having checked the time by the position of the sun in his observatory, Galpin would set the clock on the tower. In their turn, the people of the town would adjust their clocks and watches to the time on the tower. (Photo by Christine Nesbitt)

Description: Seen is the Observatory Museum in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape of South Africa on Tuesday November9, 2004. The topmost tower on the righthandside houses the only Victorian Camera Obscura in the Southern Hemisphere. Through the system of lenses and mirror in the revolving turret in its roof, this ingenious device projects an enchanting full colour live panorama of the town and its activities onto a flat viewing surface in a darkened room. The left most tower is the Observatory Museum's Clock Tower. The owner-designer of the Observatory was a watchmaker and jeweller, Henry Carter Galpin, who lived in Grahamstown from 1850 until his death in 1886. Description: Dutch Reformed Church in Nieu-Bethesda. In 1875, a commission appointed by the Graaff-Reinet Dutch Reformed Church, purchased portion of the farm, Uitkyk, from A.S. & J.P. Pienaar for ₤4000. Plots were sold off to interested parties and the Dutch Reformed congregation was established in 1878. The first minister, Ds. H.F. Schoon, was appointed in 1882. Services were initially held in the house of Mr B.J. Pienaar. During the term of office of Ds. A.A. Weich (1890-1908), a new church was built. The corner stone was laid by Mrs Weich and the edifice consecrated on 11 Feb 1905. Stones for building the church, some almost 2,5m long, were obtained from the town commonage. The church cost ₤5600 to build and, at the date of consecration, R7330 was still owing. To raise funds, the Church Council decided to subdivide 46 morgen of its irrigable ground into erven of around 1.5 morgen each and to sell these by public auction. Only on 1 July 1929, was the debt finally settled. Nieu-Bethesda is some 60 km from Graaff-Reinet, Nieu-Bethesda in the Sneeuberge area is in essence completely isolated, with only two roads in and out of the village. Established in 1875 and named by the preacher Andrew Murray, Nieu-Bethesda was eclipsed by larger towns during the 1930s and ‘40s and became quite impoverished. It lies in a narrow valley, has no street lights and is only about one to three kilometers wide with less than a thousand people living in the Town.
