Description: Samwell balances the football on his head as he walks through his village in Nketepa where he spends his school holidays with his family. Samwell is part of the Kwahu Tafo Village Football Academy in Mpraeso - a town 3 hours journey north of Accra, Ghana. The Academy was established to give soccer coaching to local children, improving their fitness and football skills. Many of the children come from underprivileged homes in the surrounding areas. The majority of the children live in the Academy hostel in Kwahu Tafo. The children sleep in a single dormitory, packed with 15 bunk beds, while some sleep on mattresses on the floor. The children help to cook their meals, and maintain the hostel. The staff at the Academy ensure that all the children attend school during the day, before participating in training each afternoon. Path: african.pictures / Twenty Ten / Andrew Esiebo
Description: Surviving DreamsWith a population of 160 million (ANDREW TO CHECK), Nigeria is not only the largest country in sub-Saharan African but it may well be the most soccer mad. Any open space, be it an empty ground under a flyover, a beach or a market, can be found transformed into a makeshift football pitch; its player dreaming of becoming Nigeria’s soccer stars. ‘Surviving Dreams’ is the story of coach/evangelist Sunny Omini, an ex-football star who promising career was cut short by injuries. He later went into coaching but quit suddenly to become a Christian missionary. Years later he returned to the game, setting up the Signal Meteor Football Academy, a grassroots training academy for young men in danger of social exclusion. Today, he works with around 30 young men on what he calls a ‘church on the field’, helping them to build a brighter future through soccer..
