Description: Central Mashonaland Province, Zimbabwe 08/2002 Crisis in Zimbabwean food security: Once the breadbasket of southern Africa, Zimbabwe has faced a deepening crisis in food security. The devastation to food production of Cyclone Eline in February 2000, which left an estimated 250,000 Zimbabweans homeless, and the drought of the 2002-2003 growing seasons, has been compounded by the political crisis with regard to land. Under President Robert MugabeÃÂs ruling ZANU-PF party the majority of commercial farmers have left their farms. In the Mazowe district of Central Mashonaland province only four of the original 220 commercial farmers are still operating. In July 2002 there were reports in every district of people starving to death. In 2002 Feed the Hungry, a programme funded by UK-based Tearfund, carried out a survey at all of their 69 sites countrywide. What they discovered was devastating.
