Path: african.pictures / Bailey's African History Archive / Drum Social Histories
Description: DM2001082821:SAED:SOCIAL:EDUCATION:JUN1955 - The Shut-down On African Education - Mrs J. Motsenyane of the Alexandra Methodist School. These are some of the 116 teachers who have been sacked from schools. There is a pincer movement closing in centers of learning. In primary schools that unfortunate Bantu Education Act Arrived! Masses of parents, under the banner of the African National Congress, particularly on the Reef, went on boycott from the fatal day of April 1 by withdrawing their children from schools. And the Government's reply? Numbers of children who did not turn up for school by and on 25 April have been banned from schooling anywhere in the Union. As a result, of a total number of 6,948 pupils coming under this ban, 116 teachers in all have been served with a month's notice to leave school. The school, going population outside school has thus increased immensely. Banned pupils, sacked teachers, half-empty schools. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)

Description: SAED:SOCIAL:GAMBLING:DRUM JANUARY 1961- Fah Fee: all sections play this number racket Ð The sleek American car with the China man behind the wheel threads its way carefully down Hanover Street, spine of Cape TownÕs teeming District Six, where they Ðsay Ð a thousand murderers could hide for a lifetime from the cops. Even in the changed world of today. It pulls in to the curb, the engine still ticking over, and the chinaman gives a gentle toot on his horn. Form the shadowy doorway of a tumbledown shop a lean, quick figure emerges, one hand gripping something in his jacket pocket. He glances swiftly up and down the street, over the heads of gutterfuls of kids and round the broad beams of washerwomen coming and going. ItÕs all clear Ð and he draws a fistful of paper slips from his pocket. As the tiny square of paper is taken from the matchbox the Chinaman is already on his way again, and the helper lifts his hand to his throat and draws it quickly a cross as though killing a cocker

Description: Theophilus Tettey Aryee, aged 70, sits in front of his house at Mamprobi in Accra, Ghana. When representing Ghana's national team in 2009, he put on the same jacket he wore in 1954.. "I sometimes get bored with the football being played in modern times, I think we played better in our time,” he said. There has been much debate in the run up to the FIFA World Cup over the attitude of modern soccer players towards the game. Some say that it has become a money-motivated business, which is far removed from days gone by when players were driven by the honour of representing their nation.

Nick Walker sits with this chief negotiator, Tata Dominic Mabikwa to his right and two of Ncumisa's uncles to his left. Throughout the negotiations Nick needs to keep his jacket on and keep silent. If he says anything or relaxes too much, he will be made to pay with gifts and a higher bridal price. Usually bottles of brandy are produced to lubricate the process. The family, however, belong to a Christian grouping that frown on alcohol use so the spirit was left out of the mix.. A senior man, Tata Dominic does not need bottles of brandy to lubricate the relationship. Within minutes he has worked out the network of relatives that tie his family to the wider Ngcaweni family and important ability in a culture which traditionally put great stock by kinship relationships. He is the man who does most of the talking on behalf of Nick, much of which is conduc
