Description: 040109-EMI04.jpg SWAZILAND, Shiselweni. October 2003 Mbangwani Royal Residence, in Shiselweni District. Reed dance ceremony for King Mswati 3, thousands of bare-breasted young maidens danced in front of King Mswati taking part in a traditional ceremony now seen as an audition to join King Mswati's many wives. The 35-year-old king, sub-Saharan Africa's last absolute monarch, now has 9 wives and 2 fiancees a royal luxury that has drawn criticism as his small southern African kingdom battles poverty and a raging AIDS epidemic. Lined up in rows, the maidens danced before the king. Here a group of young girls await the start of the ceremony, an Aids awareness poster on the wall behind them. By 1957 she was already well established as a theatrical star. Here sh

Description: DM2001082010:GCP:SOCIAL:3AUG1958 - Mamathola, This Once Rich Tribe - We Must Leave Metz. The Native reserve of Metz at the foothills of the Magaliesburg. For 200 years the 1,200 families of the Mamathola have been called one of the richest tribes in the country: but that is a thing of the past. Today after a long peaceful existence, they face the danger of becoming a wondering tribe. Knowledgable farmers who once owned acres upon acres of orchards, and old men who were expert farmers in their day, had all the same story to tell me. The tribe was moved from their ancestral land in the lush Letsitele valley in the Wolkberg Mountains. Story by Obed Musi. (Photograph by Alf Kumalo BAHA) see Post Aug 10 1958
