    Title: Historic Grahamstown
    Image Number: APN26389
    Media Id: 61_445
Path: african.pictures / Independent Photographers / Christine Nesbitt Hills
Description: The picture shows an image made by the only Victorian Camera Obscura in the Southern Hemisphere in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday November 9, 2004. Through the system of lenses and mirror in the revolving turret in its roof, this ingenious device projects an enchanting full colour live panorama of the town and its activities onto a flat viewing surface in a darkened room. The owner-designer of the Observatory was a watchmaker and jeweller, Henry Carter Galpin, who lived in Grahamstown from 1850 until his death in 1886. A successful businessman with seven sons, he still found time to pursue his interests of astronomy, optics, natural history, music and practical mechanics - all of which are reflected in the house he designed. Description: Children playing a football match on the sandy pitches of Khayelitsha.Established in 1985 by the apartheid regime to settle the influx of Black Africans, mainly from the Xhosa communities of the Eastern Cape who had come to Cape Town in search of work, the township has grown immensely. With a population of between 1.5 to 2 million, it is arguably the largest township in Africa. It has though been largely upstaged by Soweto in Guateng Province. Khayelitsha is very young demographically with 40% of its population under the age of 19. Since the ANC came to power in 1994 a lot of improvements have been attempted in the township. New brick housing and schools are evident and the crime rate has fallen drastically in the past 3 years. Serious problems though persist. It is estimated that one third of its population is HIV positive and figures from local NGO's show that nearly 1 in 3 children suffer some form of sexual abuse by the time they are 18.

Description: NORTHERN SUDAN - NUBIA, THE BLACK PHARAOHS - A man and his son ride a donkey in front of the pyramids of Nuri, located about 10 km from Karima, on the Southern bank of the Nile. Its cemetery with 82 tombs, most with pyramidal superstructures, buried 21 kings, together with 52 queens and princes. Taharqa (died 664 BC), king of the 25th Dynasty, was the first king to build his tomb at Nuri; it is the biggest pyramid at the site. Other buildings include a tumulus, funerary chapels, a church, and houses. Unlike the Egyptian pyramids which were built to hide the burial chamber, the Napatan ones are epi-taphs for the deceased, who are buried in a hypogeum underneath. Description: NUBIA, NORTHERN SUDAN - THE BLACK PHARAOHS - Two boys look down from Jebel Barkal at Napata’s pyramids at sunset. Napata, the capital of the Kushite kings, is situated at the foot of Jebel Barkal. The excavations of the hill and its surrounding area uncovered several temples, a mud brick palace-complex, pyramids, and other kinds of tombs. Nine temples are identified; the biggest one is dedicated to the Egyptian god Amun. Many of the temples are decorated and have carved hieroglyphic inscriptions. The pyramids are part of the royal Napatan-Meroitic cemetery. Unlike the Egyptian pyramids which were built to hide the burial chamber, the Napatan ones are epitaphs for the deceased, who are buried in a hypogeum underneath.Nubia, Northern Sudan, March 2005 (Photo by Africa24 Media/Manoocher Deghati) ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
