I relaxed in a not-too-comfortable chair in a plush Lagos Nightclub where Bobby Benson and his Hep Cats dished out music thrice a week and listened to his latest composition. I watched a packed crowd of dancers of all colours sway to the rhythm of the tune and ask for more and my mind raced back to somewhere at Moleye street in the year of the Lord, 1945. Why? That’s where it all started – I saw the birth of Bobby’s now famous Jam Session Orchestra. I can still re-live those evenings of sweating and shouting and of the ear-splitting screeches of imperfectly played musical instruments. (Photograph by Drum Photographer ©BAHA) `

"Amin's impatience and wilfulness has led, directly or indirectly, to the murder of innocent people" - One day when the graves are counted and the grisly evidence is put together, Africans will try to find out what pushed Idi Amin Dada, this seemingly affable and tolerant man, into tyranny. Perhaps part of the answer goes back to his early years in the isolated north-west of Uganda. His tribe was so backward that it had no chieftaincy system, nor the kind of local democracy that many other African people take for granted. Strong personalities counted more than the wise or compliant ones. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)

Description: DM2008060310:EAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:OCT 1963 The Great Nkomo Rally The ayes have it and Nkomo has another successful meeting. Through the dust a large shadow loomed. All the township was sunk in the dust rising thick and smoky from the pounding feet of its population and through this the big, shadowy figure plodded with purpose, swinging his stick in front of him. It was Joshua Nkomo. Behind him, dim in the dust but silhouetted against the sun, was an ever-changing pattern of thousands of people, arms flickering high, bodies prancing and loping along to the insistent rhythm of a chant: (Photograph by Drum Photographer ©BAHA)

The AMU general secretary, Matthew Nkolomo, was elected president of the break-away organization and UTC general secretary, Matthew Mwendapole, resigned from the UTUC to join the ZTUC. Mwendapoles resignation has strengthened the belief that all is not well within the UTUC, in the same way that the resignation of Sir Robert Tredgold from the federal Service in 1961 indicated that all was no t so rosy within the united Federal Party when it was at the height of preaching partnership. Description: DM2000062701:POLITICS:WOMEN:DEC1954 - Masterpiece In Bronze - Cissie Gool. Cape Town's coloured 'Joan Of Arc' of non-whites!. Among the candidates standing for re-election in the recent Cape Town City Council's elections, was Mrs Zairunissa Gool, who was described in the nomination papers as a 'housewife.' Mrs Gool, however, has been and is more than a mere 'housewife;' for more than 25 years this goodlooking and dynamic woman has been one of the colourful personalities in non-European leadership in South Africa. Barefooted little Coloured children in the slums of District Six, bright-eyed Africans in the Africans township of Langa and thousands of other people spread out from Cape Town to Natal and the Transvaal either know personally, or by name, as a leader. Cissie, as she is known affectionately to most people in Cape Town, has been a herion in public affairs chiefly because of the fearless way she has championed the non-European cause.
