Prisoners are made to strip naked and then to jump up in the air clapping their hands, opening their mouths, and then turn round. This is known as 'Tausa' or as the 'Zulu Dance'. Regulation No 388 (b) of the Prison Regulations of 1911, says:The searching of a convict shall be conducted with due regard to decency and self-respect,and in as seemly a manner as consistent with the necessity of discovering any concealed article on or in any part of his body or clothing. Drum submits that the method of searching shown in these two photographs has no regard whatever to dencency or self-respect; that it is neither necessary or even effective in preventing smuggling; and that it should be stopped forthwith. Description: The picture shows internally displaced children leavinng their shelter and going to school in the Kasab IDP camp near Kutum, North Darfur, Sudan on Monday June 1, 2004. By mid 2004 in the Darfur region of western Sudan, ongoing conflict had displaced approximately 1.2 million people, most of whom were fleeing terror attacks by armed militia that included large-scale killings and abductions, including of children, as well as gang rapes, looting and burning of villages and stealing of livestock. Thousands have died from these attacks or from disease and tens of thousands of others have gathered in camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs), with little or no belongings and without adequate shelter, food or safe water and sanitation. An additional 120,000 people, primarily children and women, have fled across the border into neighbouring Chad. An estimated two million people have been affected by this crisis and are being further threatened by the imminent rainy season which will hinde

Description: This train was captured on the line that runs from Cape Town Station to Simonstown. It is a safe, reliable and most beautiful line. From Muizenberg it runs all the way along the coast. At times, when it is spring tide, the trains have to stop because the water may wash over the rails. This picture was taken from just outside Kalk Bay Station. Cape Town has a wonderful railway grid that transports thousands of commuters every day. The train is much cheaper than a taxi.

Today stunning lasses in nothing but tiny g-strings can be seen bathing topless on these beaches, but the colourful dressing rooms are preserved and can still be rented for the day. Description: Kalk Bay started its life as Kalk Oven Baai (Chalk Oven Bay), as the Dutch East Indian Company, better known as the VOC (Verenigde Oos-Indische Compagnie), needed chalk to paint the walls of their houses. Seashells were burnt here in huge oven to release the chalk. Kalk Bay became a haven for runaway slaves and sailors who jumped ship. The natural harbour provided safety to a growing fishing community. Fresh fish from Kalk Bay was driven to Cape Town per horse and buggy on a daily basis. The railway line (clearly seen in the picture) meant that the fish could be "exported" to Cape Town a lot quicker, but it also brought holiday makers to this little enclave. Soon prices in Kalk Bay shot through the roof and the fisher folk found themselves squeezed out of their own community by rich people. During the apartheid era the fisher community was forced to live in a small part of town close to the harbour. The Fishermen Flats that were erected to help with the housing shortages can

The dollops of red, yellow in green gives the picture life. These shacks were about to be demolished when I took these pictures. In their place the government has built two-story apartment blocks. These shacks have developed because of years of influx control under apartheid. In the homelands, or Bantustans, there were not enough jobs and not enough land. People had to move to the city. Today township dwellers are a powerful lobby group and our government is providing electricity and other services.
