Description: Zimbabwe, Harare.A typical scene in Zimbabwe, gas (petrol) station with no supplies. Zimbabweans spend hours every week queuing for petrol and diesel. The shortage is a result of government mismanagementand corruption, and has resulted in dramatic decline in the Zimbabwean economy. Much of the country's fuel ends up in the Democratic Republic of Congo, fueling the Zimbabwean war effort there. 2002© Eric Miller

Description: The nomadic people of the Richtersveld are indiginous to the area and earn a living from farming with goats and sheep. The water shortage in this arid region necessitates migration from one area in the National reserve to another, in order to ensure the necessary grazing for their herds. Grazing land in the reserve comes at a premium and is limited in some cases to rocky areas only, making their existence even more astonishing. The great Orange River that flows through the Richtersveld contrasts dramaticly with the dry rocky area that neighbours the river. This photograph was taken close to the Orange River where the Nomadic people and their animals recuperate before going out into the dry veld to graze. The subject is a grandmother watching over her grandson’s herd. The dry and rocky landscape of the Richtersveld can clearly be seen in the background.

Description: DM2008090209:EAED:SOCIAL:PERSONALITIES:JAN 1976 -Shame Of The Shanties - Despite The Authorities, shantytowns became semi-permanent features. A dire shortage of housing, worsened by the continuos stream of people to the cities, led to serious urban problems in Kenya. Shantytowns and slam, areas sprang up on the edges of the cities. Shanty estates grow up from day to day in Nairobi, as they do in many other cities of the world. Kenya's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Munyua Waiyaki, said recently: "Though Nairobi is acclaimed as a beautiful city, there are some sore sights, like Mathare and Kawangare and other shanty areas, such as Pumwani and Dagoretti, not forgetting other sections in different corners of Nairobi." Description: DM2008061225:EAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:AUG 1979 - Amin's Legacy Claims New Victims - Mother and Child at a refugee camp for Ugandans fleeing the killing fields of Uganda. At least 50,000 Ugandans have fled their country into neighbouring countries in the wake of the victory of the Tanzanian-backed Uganda National Liberation Army. Most of the refugees - about 35,000 - are in the Sudan where there is a shortage of relief supplies. At Nimule, one of the three main entry points along the border with Uganda, refugees were living on cassava given to them by the local peasants while those camping near the shore of the Nile River were depending mainly on fish. Description: DM2008061905:EAED:SOCIAL:STARVATION:SEP 1980 - The Face Of Famine - While the politicians squabble the children starve. What started as a mere food shortage has now become a national disaster in which an estimated 300,000 people, mostly the cattle-raising and warlike Karamojong tribemen in north-east Uganda, have died. In a country ravged by disaster and death, about 300 people a day, mainly children, are dying from starvation and malnutrition. With the Uganda government in a shambles and international relief work hampered by armed thugs who ambush the food lorries heading for disaster areas, there seems little hope of preventing the deaths of several thousand more. There are many factors behing the famine, previously unheard of in a country capable of feeding three times its own population. During the liberation war which toppled Idi Amin's murderous regime, more than 20,000 automatic rifles fell into the hands of cattle raiders who had previously carried spears. The cattle raid
