Description: DM2001082010:GCP:SOCIAL:3AUG1958 - Mamathola, This Once Rich Tribe - We Must Leave Metz. The Native reserve of Metz at the foothills of the Magaliesburg. For 200 years the 1,200 families of the Mamathola have been called one of the richest tribes in the country: but that is a thing of the past. Today after a long peaceful existence, they face the danger of becoming a wondering tribe. Knowledgable farmers who once owned acres upon acres of orchards, and old men who were expert farmers in their day, had all the same story to tell me. The tribe was moved from their ancestral land in the lush Letsitele valley in the Wolkberg Mountains. Story by Obed Musi. (Photograph by Alf Kumalo BAHA) see Post Aug 10 1958

Description: DM2006120108:SAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITY:NOV58 - Treason Trial Halts - Treason Trialists outside the court. October 13, 1958 - the mild, cloudy Pretoria morning on which the most sensational of things happened for the 91 men and women of all races facing a charge of high treason. Mr Pirow, leader of the Crown team at the trial, rose to his feet, touched a colleague who was still addressing the court, and brought the microphone to his mouth. "Your Lordship, I withdraw the indictment against the accused," he said in his hoarse voice. The height of the trial's drama had come. Up in the packed non-white gallery, black faces lit up and swung round to take swift looks at the judges, still wondering if they had heard right. Out in the street, where spectators and photographers were pressing on the accused, shouts of "Africa" rang high and firm, victory handshakes spelled the day's relief. Description: DM2000012415:SAED:POLITICS:SEP1957 - Treason Trial - This is how the Drill Hall was set up for the trial. The trial started on December 19, 1956. As the biggest case in South Africa's history lumbered to the end of its first stage this August 1957, the 156 accused men and women wondered how many of them would be back in court again. The 156 national leaders had first appeared at a preparatory examination into treason at the end of 1956, in the specially constructed court at the Drill Hall, Johannesburg; they had spent their lives in and out of court for most of 1957; and they could now see the possibility of the same prospect for the third calendar year, 1958, if they were committed for trial in the Supreme Court. Description: DM2006120406:SAED:SOCIAL:HEALTH:WOMEN:APERTHEID:JAN1958 - Goodbye '57 - South African nurses rebelled at colour clauses. Voices of Non-White nurses rang out far and clear when nursing apartheid became law. They refused to be advised or controlled by white nurses. So they called a conference in Johannesburg and set up a new all race group, the Federation of South African Nurses and Midwives. They will try to gain affiliation with the International Council of nurses. At the conference there were acrid accusations of the South Africa Nursing Association, now completely white. Description: A Taarab orchestra plays in the Cultural Music Club in Stone Town, Zanzibar. It is difficult to determine the precise history of the Taarab music in Zanzibar. However the legend has it that Taarab in Zanzibar was started by the Sultan Seyyid Barghash 1870-1888. It was this ruler who started it all in Zanzibar that later spread over all of East Africa. He imported a Taarab ensemble from Egypt to play in his Beit el-Ajab palace. Later on he decided to send to Egypt Mohamed Ibrahim to learn the music and he also learned to play the instrument know by the name of Kanuni. Upon his return he formed a Zanzibar Taarab orchestra. In 1905 Zanzibar's second music society Ikwhani Safaa Musical Club was established and continues to thrive today with around 35 active members. Ikwhani Safaa and Cultural Music Club founded at 1958 remained the leading Zanzibar Taarab orchestra.. Sound Captions: 20050702taarab1.amr20050702taarab2.amr20050702taarab3.amr
