Description: My father always walked the road less travelled. And my mother walked it with him. She was an ever present support through at least two episodes of serious burnout as he sought to hold a regional obstetric service together.from 1981 to 1996. Then, unwise decisions made by the new administration dismantled the structure. The regional perinatal and maternal mortality rates again climbed in the wake of those decisions. Years later the Department is attempting to reinstate the systems my father and other colleagues had put in place. Although officially retired, my father continues to serve, this time in a new sphere of medicine. He was asked to assist in a clinic and hospice for people living with HIV/AIDS in Howick, the town where he has retired. This has required a rapid learning curve, but he finds the work very fulfilling. Photo: David Larsen/africanpictures.net
