Title: Darling National Demonstration wind farm
Path: african.pictures / The Media Bank / Reinhardt Hartzenberg
Description: Darling National Demonstration wind farm: In June 2000 the Minister of Minerals and Energy declared the Darling wind farm as a National Demonstration project. Construction on the project started in September 2007 and the first wind-generated energy was produced in May 2008. In one year the 4 (four) wind turbines installed (each 1.3MW) produce 8.6 Giga Watt hours or the equivalent of the yearly consumption of some 700 average South African households. The turbines rise 50 meters above the ground, (equivalent to a 17 storey building) where the three rotor blades and the nacelle, housing the generator and the gearbox, are located. Their combined weight is 62 tons. The turbines start producing power at a wind speed of 8km/h. They reach their full potential at 54 km/h wind speed. The blades rotate slowly at a constant speed of 32 revolutions per minute regardless of the wind speed. The length of the blades is 32 meters, just slightly more than the length of a tennis court. Description: The Koeberg Nuclear Power Station as seen from Bloubergstrand with seagulls in the foreground. Koeberg Nuclear Power Station ("Koeberg") is the only nuclear power station in Africa. Koeberg is situated 27km north of Cape Town on the Atlantic coast to the north of Melkbos (Duynefontein), next to the SA Police Training College. oeberg is owned and operated by the country's only national electricity supplier, Eskom. The two reactors at the station form the cornerstone of the South African nuclear program. Koeberg contains two uranium pressurised water reactors based on a design by Framatome of France. Koeberg supplies power to the national grid so that over-capacity can be redistributed to the rest of the country on an as-needed basis. Koeberg is rated at 1,800 MW, its average annual production is 13,668 GWh and it has two large turbine generators (2 × 900 MW). Construction of the plant began in 1976, and Unit 1 was synchronised to the grid on 4 April 1984. Unit 2 followed on 25 Ju
