Description: GSU personnel defending the railway line that passes through the slum of Kibera on its way to Uganda. The ODM oppostion supporters were reacting to the news that Ugandan military had intervened on behalf of President Kibaki in certain provinces in western Kenya near the border. These reports remain unfounded but what is certainly true is that President Museveni remains the only Head of State to have officially congratulated President Kibaki on his disputed election win before the peace agreement was signed..

Description: ODM supporter firing a sling with a stone at GSU personnel. The GSU were dispatched to protect the railway line that runs through the slum of Kibera on its way to its final destination in Uganda on the last day of mass protests called by leaders of the Opposition. ODM supporters accuse Uganda and its President Museveni of siding with President Kibaki in the disputed election row. There are rumours (and only that) of Ugandan military personnel helping Govt forces quell protesters. While these accusations remain unfounded what is certainly true is that Museveni, President of Uganda remains the only Head of State to officially congratulate President Kibaki on the disputed re-appointment before the peace agreement was signed.

On Wednesday 23rd January 2008, collective funerals were held at a church named Ligi Ndogo in Nairobi for those killed during the previous week's 3 day rallies by ODM supporters. They were protesting at the request of the Opposition leader, Raila Odinga, over the now much-debated disputed election result held 27th December. The ceremony was overseen by the ODM leadership. Title: THE TRUTH ABOUT IDI AMIN
Path: african.pictures / Bailey's African History Archive / Drum Social Histories
Description: DM2008061101:EAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:MAY 1973 - The Truth About Idi Amin - In the guise of a champion of Africa, General Idi Amin Dada of Uganda has committed heinous crimes against his own African people. The political action of the wilful soldier-president, his expulsion of the Asians, Israelis and British, have been widely covered in the world press. His crimes against his own people have received little attention from the headlines. Day by day, month after month, execution squads - action for or operation without interference from the Ugandan military regime- have purged Uganda of hundreds of its most able and loyal citizens and eliminated thousands of officers, soldiers and innocent people. President Idi Amin of Uganda has, in a dramatically short time, given marching orders to the Israelis, the British and the Asians. He also taken uncomprimising steps to rid Uganda's streets of armed robbers and prostitutes, and has campaigned against what he calls "phoney missionaries". The controversial soldier-president has been criticised by the foreign press for jeopardizing the economy and of being intolerant of Christian worship, while there have been reports of disappearances of many top Ugandan people. Inevitable political differences have started energing amont the exile. There is a definite apprehension within the migr groups about the true intentions of former politicians in Uganda who, it is thought, would like to take power when Amin's regime is toppled. The Murder of Uganda's Archbishop Janani Luwum at trhe hands of Idi Amin's regime shocked the world. And for the first time it triggered off open resistance by the thousands of Ugandan exiles who, hitherto, had been content to live in anonymity wherever they felt they could settle safely. Having pledged to assist liberation movements in Southern Africa, General Amin made an all-out effort to help raise funds for the movements in response to a special appeal launched by his foreign minister, Mr Wanume Kibedi. Description: A main railway line that runs West and on into Uganda from Nairobi passes right through Kibera. During the post-election violence, pro-ODM supporters tore up the railway line in protest against perceived Ugandan interference and backing for the Government in the disputed elections in December 2007.Kibera, at the very heart of Nairobi City, is the second largest slum in Africa, second only to Soweto in South Africa. It is made up of 11 so-called villages or districts and is about 1 million strong. The slum makes up about a quarter of Nairobi's population and sits uncomfortably next to the Nairobi business sprawl on the edge of the CBD. It was the centre of a lot of the violence that inflicted Kenya following the disputed election results in December 2007, when the predominantly Luo population in the slum, who are ardent supporters of the then Opposition Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), were a big source of the mayhem that the elections instigated.
