Description: NORTHERN SUDAN - NUBIA, THE BLACK PHARAOHS - A man and his son ride a donkey in front of the pyramids of Nuri, located about 10 km from Karima, on the Southern bank of the Nile. Its cemetery with 82 tombs, most with pyramidal superstructures, buried 21 kings, together with 52 queens and princes. Taharqa (died 664 BC), king of the 25th Dynasty, was the first king to build his tomb at Nuri; it is the biggest pyramid at the site. Other buildings include a tumulus, funerary chapels, a church, and houses. Unlike the Egyptian pyramids which were built to hide the burial chamber, the Napatan ones are epi-taphs for the deceased, who are buried in a hypogeum underneath.
