Description: A former British colony, The Gambia was an important staging post for the 19th century traders that plied their iniquitous business in the region. Today, according to the United Nations, The Gambia is one of the 48 Least Developed Countries, ranking 155th out of 173 on the 2005 Human Development Index. More than half of the population lives on less than a dollar a day, with most of the population surviving on subsistence agriculture. Currently the Gambias major exports are groundnuts, fish, palm kernels and cotton lint.
