    Title: Treason Trial Halts
Path: african.pictures / Bailey's African History Archive / Drum Social Histories
Description: DM2006120108:SAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITY:NOV58 - Treason Trial Halts - Treason Trialists outside the court. October 13, 1958 - the mild, cloudy Pretoria morning on which the most sensational of things happened for the 91 men and women of all races facing a charge of high treason. Mr Pirow, leader of the Crown team at the trial, rose to his feet, touched a colleague who was still addressing the court, and brought the microphone to his mouth. "Your Lordship, I withdraw the indictment against the accused," he said in his hoarse voice. The height of the trial's drama had come. Up in the packed non-white gallery, black faces lit up and swung round to take swift looks at the judges, still wondering if they had heard right. Out in the street, where spectators and photographers were pressing on the accused, shouts of "Africa" rang high and firm, victory handshakes spelled the day's relief. Description: DM2002041702:SAED:LABOUR:MAR1960 - Last Hour Of Dispair and Hope - Coalbrook. A lone miner leaving the mine after the disaster that shocked the whole of South Africa. He is one of those who turned their backs on the mine after the disaster. 435 miners were buried by a rockfall 500 feet underground. Miners believed that the shakes are caused by the whites. "They did not pay the big snake underground last year. Every year they bribe it for coal which they take away. Now the snake got fed up and shook the mine,"said one of the miners. Description: . SAED:SOCIAL:DRUM FEBRUARY 1952Ð A Day In The Beach Ð Look at those people out with the sharks!!. IÕd rather stay here and build sand castles. - There are thousands of Africans on the Reef and in the country who have never seen the sea; but to Africans, Coloureds and Indians in Durban there is a huge salt swimming bath and a sandy beach that is free for all, and for sharks too! You can see the sharks all too well sporting themselves in the sea by the Umgeni River, and bathers must keep between strict limits if they donÕt want their feet chopped off! But that doesnÕt stop children running down to the beaches whenever they can, paddling, diving, riding on the waves and standing on their heads. People in Durban say they have plenty of problems, but the sea washes most of them away! (Photograph by Jurgen Schadeberg © BAHA) NEG 039 FRAME 22
