Description: Dr Jonathan Victor Larsen MBchB (UCT) F.R.C.O.G. returns a ultra sound machine to a ward. Times have changed in rural hospitals. Where once nurses would ensure equipment was available when doctors needed it, the professionalisation of nursing staff has meant doctors need to do such work themselves. I spent two days in the final week of my father's 43 years in rural medicine documenting his work. His passion was always to serve so fetching his own equipment only troubled him if it interfered with his ability to serve his patients well.. . Photo: David Larsen/Africa Media Online

The standard of soccer is very low compared to the days of South African Soccer League when Indians, coloureds and Africans played together. In Pubs we don't have the right material as yet. Our boys lack proper training and guidance from men who are in the know-how. The only solution is for experienced international coaches throughout the country which could be a boon to our soccer. With these facilities at hand- which we hope to get in three years time - our boys could make the grade and stand up to overseas competition. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)

It's all right if you get a job with the government. Then a man and his family can live. But far too many children die with their bellies full. Research men are trying desperately to find a crop that will not only grow but also pay in the north. It's the north of Northern Rhodesia, the backward backyard of the federation. Here, some places, the infact mortality rate rises to as much as 30-50 per cent. Here families live and multiply on the equivalent of 5 a year. Statistics have a nice clean word to describe these people: "subsistence farmers." This means a man who prays for good rains, hopes this year's baby lives and last year doesn't weaken, and goes about surviving this month before thinking about next. That night three platoons of riot squad police, bristling firepower, rolled into Chifubu. But the Holy Week War had left it bloodiest mark. Two weeks later, no arrest had been made. The battle for leadership between UNIP and ANC became a real war at Easter when fighting, reprisal raids and killing tore apart the uneasy peace of N.R. It wasn't only political people who were hurt, though. In the most savage of the Easter fighting a mob of about 30 attacked a peaceful home and three men were killed there.
