Title: The moon from within an Airbus A319
Path: african.pictures / The Media Bank / Izak de Vries
Description: We took off at Cape Town International en route to Durban just as the sun was about to rise. Slowly it grew light and suddenly I saw the setting moon in the distance. It was a lovely sight. I took many pictures. This one worked, thanks in part to the stability of the plane, and an image stabiliser. At f2.8 and 1/20s one has little margin for error, but I persisted at ISO 80 because I wanted to capture the colours. The aircraft was an Airbus A319.

Title: Modern Catholic Church in Lansdowne Road
Path: african.pictures / The Media Bank / Izak de Vries
Description: This beautiful modern Catholic Church is in Lansdowne Road, Cape Town. The mural says: Beyond 2000. It also proclaims: Christ Yesterday Today Forever. These mottos are captured by clever artwork explaining the continuation of their faith. I am always in awe when I see how people are willing to produce only their best for their religion.

Title: Fishermen Flats in Kalk Bay
Path: african.pictures / The Media Bank / Izak de Vries
Description: The natural harbour in Kalk Bay provided safety to a growing fishing community who thrived here in the late eighteenth century and early nineteenth century. During the apartheid era the fisher community was forced to live a small part of town close to the harbour. These are some of the Fishermen Flats that were erected to help with housing shortages. When I walked around in this part of town the children shouted: Hallo mister tourist! They know that tourism brings money to their community.

Title: Fishing trawlers in Kalk Bay Harbour I
Path: african.pictures / The Media Bank / Izak de Vries
Description: Fishing trawlers in Kalk Bay Harbour: Kalk Bay started its life as Kalk Oven Baai (Chalk Oven Bay), as the Dutch East Indian Company, better known as the VOC (Verenigde Oos-Indische Compagnie), needed chalk to paint the walls of their houses. Seashells were burned here in huge ovens to release the chalk. Kalk Bay became a haven for runaway slaves and sailors who jumped ship. The natural harbour provided safety to a growing fishing community. Fresh fish from Kalk Bay was driven to Cape Town per horse and buggy on a daily basis. The breakwater to protect the harbour was built in the early twentieth century. Kalk Bay is a popular holiday destination and the freshest fish is still sold right there in harbour.

    Title: Proudly South African basket
Path: african.pictures / The Media Bank / Izak de Vries
Description: This basket was woven from colourful wires. Viva South Africa, viva! Long live the spirit of creativity in South Africa, long live! I guess I show my age by reciting these struggle slogans, but I am proud of our collective achievements in the democratic South Africa. During the dark days of apartheid when PW wagged fingers at us, there were days when it was hard to imagine that arts and crafts would one day be able to celebrate our unity. But we overcame and here it is: Proudly South African art.

It is a tangible memory of the roles Jews have played in South Africa. The dark wooden panels are magnificent. Description: This mat and pot were woven from grass. Imagine the hours of work that go into the creation of delicate patterns like these. One can often pick them up for a song next to the road. These specimens were collected and displayed in the Iziko Museum in Cape Town. Jolly good, I say! Recognise the contribution of weavers in South Africa. Weaving is a big industry world wide, but in South Africa we have special people who create objects like these.

Path: african.pictures / The Media Bank / Izak de Vries
Description: I love the combination of a dirty face and the scar on the forehead. That is what little boys are about The spiky hair is done in an ingenious way. His au pair used green sunlight soap (those large green blocks) and a wet facecloth to massage his scalp with. The result was that his hair got all spiky. He looked too cute when she did that, but hours after this shot was taken, he rubbed bubblegum into the spikes, so all the hair had to come off.

Path: african.pictures / The Media Bank / Izak de Vries
Description: These quirky dressing rooms at St James are relics from the days when ladies would go to the beach, change into bath robes that would cover everything down to their wrists and ankles, and then walk to the sea surrounded by female servants carrying a screen to cover her ladyship's nudity. Today stunning lasses in nothing but tiny g-strings can be seen bathing topless on these beaches, but the colourful dressing rooms are preserved and can still be rented for the day. Title: Buddhist temple, Bronkhorstspruit VII
Path: african.pictures / The Media Bank / Izak de Vries
Description: This fascinating temple is in Bronkhorstspruit, a dorpie in the middle of the Gauteng mealie fields. While travelling on the N4 from Tshwane / Pretoria to Middelburg in the old Transvaal, graffiti often reminded us that we were driving through rightwing country. Suddenly this amazing structure appeared. We had to investigate and we had to get pictures. We were met by the friendly, helpful staff who gave us permission to roam and to record these pictures. Buddhism is not so much a religion as a way of life, but the temple and the religious symbols, coupled to a disciplined lifestyle, provide the setting for the members to meditate and to exist free from the trappings of the rat race. On the R25 the journey from the Johannesburg International Airport to the temple will take about half an hour. Money for the erection of the temple was supplied by the Peoples Republic of China.

Description: This train was captured on the line that runs from Cape Town Station to Simonstown. It is a safe, reliable and most beautiful line. From Muizenberg it runs all the way along the coast. At times, when it is spring tide, the trains have to stop because the water may wash over the rails. This picture was taken from St James beach just outside St James Station. Cape Town has a wonderful railway grid that transports thousands of commuters every day. The train is much cheaper than a taxi.

Description: This spaza owner has grown rich and affluent. He has advertised his prominent position in the township and has grown more successful as a result. This is a wonderful example of the two economies in South Africa. Here in the township, where the poor live, we also see an upper-class shack dweller developing. These shacks were about to demolished when I took these pictures. In their place the government has built two-storey apartment blocks. (At least one person will feel at home on the top storey!) These shacks have sprung up because of years of influx control under apartheid. In the homelands, or Bantustans, there were not enough jobs and not enough land. People had to move to the city. Today township dwellers are a powerful lobby group and our government is providing electricity and other services to them.

The Castle of the Cape of Good Hope has been restored during the nineties. During the restoration of the inner courtyard, the team discovered the foundations of the early 18th century bakery and this pool. Both have since been researched and rebuilt from plans and paintings. This fish too has been reconstructed from drawings. In the homelands, or Bantustans, there were not enough jobs and not enough land. People had to move to the city. During the period around the Second World War, the black urban population of South Africa nearly doubled. Huge areas of informal settlement grew around Johannesburg and, to a lesser extent, other major cities. One of the most famous leaders in the Squatter Movement, was James Mpanza. In defiance of the laws forcing Black people out of "white" areas, Mpanza and other leaders urged their followers to set up informal settlements. They provided hessian for shanties, employed a camp police force, controlled trading rights and charged the inhabitants levies to pay for services. The government could no longer deny the need for black settlements and eventually the central government and the Johannesburg City Council began setting up emergency camps. Today township dwellers
